Why would a couple want to be in an open relationship? How does an open relationship work?
Sex Educator Maggie Rubenstein, Ph.D. from San Francisco put it best when she said, “Some people are naturally monogamous, some people are naturally not monogamous.”
It took a few years for this profound yet simple statement to sink in. Essentially, there are many people who find great happiness in meeting one person and choosing to spend the rest of their life coupled to that person. There are, however, as many people who prefer not having to be attached to one person for their entire life. Their preference is to have sexual variety.
If you think about it, right or wrong, absolute monogamy is becoming less and less prevalent in our society.
It is true that human beings are naturally predisposed to pair up mostly for the purposes of mating. But does that mean for fifty plus years. If it did, why would at least half the population be engaged in cheating on their partner? We humans being so clever came up with loop-holes on how to deal effectively (and sometimes not so effectively) with this monogamy construct.
A common and less acceptable form of non-monogamy is adultery. It is unfortunate when people feel there is no other way to act out their non-monogamous tendencies in deceit, lies and deception.
