Condoms Once Made From Intestines

Condom history

The next time you don’t want to put on a condom because you don’t like how it feels, be grateful as once upon a time condoms were made out of animal intestines.

One of the earliest successful USA condom manufacturers was originally a sausage maker.

In the 1880s, New York sausage maker Julius Schmid left nothing to waste and started using animal intestines to make condoms.

Condoms had been made for centuries using animal parts, linen, and silk, and Schmid’s early prototypes were smelly and uncomfortable.

He soon perfected his design and named his product Ramses II after the fertile Egyptian ruler who sired over 100 children. (Showing that Schmid was both thrifty and had a wry sense of humor!)

Fun fact from PBS.org
Schmid promoted condoms to the United States military as a method of disease prevention; in fact, soldiers supplied with them were much less likely to get venereal disease.
